The Ambidextrous Robot Hand is an innovative robotic device engineered in Brunel University, London. Because of the ambidextrous feature of the robot hand, two different humanoid behaviours are accessible from a single mechatronic device. The fingers of the Ambidextrous Hand are indeed made of a reversible design which allows them to bend in both ways, so that the robotic system can behave either as a right hand or as a left hand. The mechatronic structure is connected to a remote control interface to be eventually used as an online rehabilitation device. The Ambidextrous Hand is driven by control algorithms specifically engineered to suit the wide range of its fingers, their asymmetrical tendons routing and the nonlinearity of their pneumatic actuators. The original features of the project are precisely discussed and compared with the ones of other robotic models. This book relates the whole development of the Ambidextrous Robot Hand: from its feasibility study to its mechanical architecture and its control algorithms, including its pneumatic actuation, its electronic interface and its remote control system.
Based on a review of written material published by thirteenrehabilitation counseling organizations, the study finds that thesector has few unmet information processing needs with regard topolitical and policymaking activities, both critical successfactors. The study then posits that there are significant benefitsto be gained by rehabilitation counseling networks through theconversion of process-oriented knowledge from tacit and explicit,document-based forms to automated, expressive characterizationsthat can be shared with rehabilitation counselors, clients, andothers using computers and electronic networks. The study alsoclarifies concepts supporting the requirements for cognitivelegitimacy as operationalized by fluidity, i.e., the ready transferof knowledge to and from information systems. It supports priorwork in the sociopolitical legitimacy of information technology asoperationalized by immersion, defined as the willingness to usecomputerized technologies to resolve information processingchallenges. The work includes a nomological net of informationsystem requirements that provides guidelines for improved systemslegitimacy for social networks in all sectors.
After the "Act on the Electronic Monitoring of Specific Sex Offenders" entered into force in September 2008, the Korean Ministry of Justice began in earnest to implement electronic monitoring as a tool for the enhanced supervision of sex offenders on probation. The Korean electronic monitoring scheme does not aim to reduce costs of incarceration or relieve prison overcrowding but rather seeks to reduce recidivism, promote rehabilitation, and protect the public. Tied to political interests, the use of electronic monitoring has rapidly grown over a short period of time and has become the most prominent program for sex offenders in Korea. Due to its unusual development process and unique characteristics, Korean electronic monitoring practice constitutes a new phase in the development of electronic monitoring.This study seeks to quantitatively evaluate the effectiveness of electronic monitoring on recidivism among Korean sex offenders. The findings provide a critical evaluation of the "belief" in the effectiveness of electronic monitoring as a means to reduce recidivism (which is often used to justify its application) and, overall, refute the conclusion of some previous electronic monitoring studies that postulated a fixed effect of electronic monitoring, in which electronic monitoring was described as a "treatment" that may have a deterrent effect across all types of offenders and crimes.
The second edition of the Handbook of Pain Relief in Older Adults: An Evidence-Based Approach expands on the first edition by providing a number of timely new features. This book presents an in-depth description of the solutions available for gathering tactile data, obtaining aforementioned tactile information from the data and effectively using the same in various robotic tasks.The efforts during last four decades or so have yielded a wide spectrum of tactile sensing technologies and engineered solutions for both intrinsic and extrinsic touch sensors. Nowadays, new materials and structures are being explored for obtaining robotic skin with physical features like bendable, conformable, and stretchable. Our society's preoccupation with crime and fear of crime appears to have shifted its focus to the juvenile offender. Both electronic and print media continuously warn us that juvenile offenders are increasingly younger and more virulent. The demographics of our population suggest that there will only be more juvenile offenders to fear in the near future. All of these concerns arise in a social climate that is characterized by an ever increasing demand for stronger retributive measures against the offender. The belief that only harsh justice will protect us from the ravages of juveniles has become dominant. Increasingly, perceptions and politics, rather than scientific data, dominate policy making with regard to youthful offenders. In Assessing the Youthful Offender: Issues and Techniques, Robert D. Hoge and D. A. Andrews make a restrained, rational, and ultimately persuasive argu ment for the use of standardized psychological assessments in the effective management of youth within juvenile justice systems.
