Back in Action: An American Soldier's Story of ...

This is the inspiring true story of the first amputee to return to active combat in Iraq. They put a price on his head. They did everything they could to disrupt his mission. Finally, when an antitank mine tore off his right foot, the warriors of jihad in Iraq thought they had neutralized one of their most resourceful, determined foes. They were wrong. Refusing to let his injury stop him, Captain David Rozelle roared back into action, returning to Iraq as commander of an armored cavalry troop. He became the first amputee in recent military history to resume a dangerous command on the same battlefield. In Back in Action: An American Soldier's Story of Courage, Faith, and Fortitude, Rozelle tells the whole gripping story: from the day he had to tell his pregnant wife that he was going to war (Valentine's Day, 2003) and deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom, to the fateful day four months later when a land mine tore off his right foot, and then through months of agonizing rehabilitation to his final triumphant recertification as "fit for duty". Rozelle, who has been awarded the Bronze Star with Valor and the Purple Heart, speaks with brisk frankness about his post-amputation battles and the gritty determination that carried him through it all. He recounts his inspiring battle through rehabilitation, as he learned to walk with a prosthetic foot and did his utmost to prove he still had the stuff to be a soldier: completing five sprint-distance triathlons, an Olympic-distance triathlon, the New York City Marathon, and skiing, snowboarding, and mountain climbing through Disabled Sports USA. Back in Action is an astonishing story of courage, determination, heroism, and bedrock patriotism. It is a stirring reminder of the commitment every American should have to the cause of freedom, if we hope to continue to enjoy that freedom. It's an extraordinary and inspiring story of devotion to duty overcoming all obstacles. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Patrick Lawlor. Penguin presents the unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Where Have All the Bullets Gone?, written and read by Spike Milligan. Back to those haunting days in Italy in 1944, at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, with lava running in great red rivulets down the slope towards us, and Jock taking a drag on his cigarette and saying, "I think we've got grounds for a rent rebate." The fifth volume of Spike Milligan's unsurpassed account of life as a bombardier in World War Two sees our hero dispatched from the front line to a psychiatric hospital and from there to a rehabilitation camp. Considered loony (and "unfit to be killed in combat by either side"), he becomes embroiled in his own private battle with melancholy. But it is music, wit and a little help from his friends - including one Gunner Harry Secombe - that help carry him through to his first stage appearances.... 1. Language: English. The inspiring true story of a US Special Forces soldier who was medically retired after stepping on an IED, and his incredible return to active duty.Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ryan Hendrickson is a brave, determined, and courageous soldier -- a Green Beret clearing the way for his twelve-man team while conducting combat operations against the Taliban. As the "tip of the spear," his role is to ensure the route taken by U.S. and Afghan troops are free of IEDs -- improvised explosive devices. Many soldiers do not survive their last step; those who do often lose at least one limb. While rescuing an Afghan soldier outside a mud-hut compound in 2010 -- knowing that he was in "uncleared" territory -- Ryan stepped on an IED with his right foot. The device exploded, leaving his foot dangling at the end of his leg.American soldiers losing a limb is an all-too-common occurrence. But what makes Ryan's story different is that after undergoing two dozen surgeries and a tortuous rehabilitation, he was medically retired but fought to return to active duty. Multiple skin grafts to his leg and right foot successfully reattached his lower leg, and he was aided in his recovery by wearing a new prosthetic device known as an IDEO (Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis). Once he passed a series of crucial physical tests, Ryan was able to rejoin the Green Berets within a year and physically perform his duties, redeploying to Afghanistan in March 2012.In 2016, he volunteered to return to Afghanistan with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. During a firefight with the Taliban, he risked his life under heavy enemy fire to rescue three Afghan soldiers cut off from friendly forces and return the bodies of two dead Afghan soldiers under the ethos that "no one gets left behind." For his heroic efforts on the battlefield, SFC Ryan Hendrickson was awarded a Silver Star, the nation's third-highest award for valor. An engaging and harrowing account, Tip of the Spear tells the amazing story of one Green Beret's indomitable spirit.

Perspectives on Long Term Rehabilitation: How I...

After my first year of life I was walking. I used my biped facility to play baseball with great enthusiasm but little skill. I walked thousands of school hallways and campuses as a student, then teacher, principal, and superintendent. I walked out of Walpole (NH) Congregational Church with my new bride Lynn on my arm. I carried my baby daughter Emily. We walked through London's Piccadilly Circus, the Coliseum in Rome, the Eiffel Tower, Costa Rican Indian villages, Denali, Cozumel ruins and many Caribbean beaches. I hiked the Appalachian Trail with my wife, son, brother, niece, nephew, and lots of my students and summer campers. And Dad. I walked all over the New England and Arizona trails with Dad. In my 61st year of life I walked into the neurosurgery pre-op center at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. I removed my clothes and got into the hospital gown. I laid down on a gurney, never to walk normally again. In a few hours I awoke from unsuccessful surgery on an intradural melanotic schwannoma at T-11 (about the level of my navel) inside my spinal cord. I was able to use my legs only to wiggle my toes weakly and feebly press my foot down as if on an imaginary car accelerator pedal. In the ensuing five years, I progressed from riding a gurney to walking at about 1/3 normal speed for men of my age with a cane and total attention to my jerky barely balancing legs for distances of up to half a mile and durations up to 45 minutes. This book shares what I, with the many who helped me, did to make a far greater recovery than any physician or physical therapist expected. Some of my physical rehabilitation may have specific relevance only to those with physical disabilities. All of my mental rehabilitation will have relevance to everyone. I write this hoping to give all of you kind enough to listen to this book some valuable insights without your needing to experience paraplegia, like I did, to discover them. 1. Language: English. Our feet are sophisticated pieces of architecture. They are composed of a network of muscles, bones, nerves, tendons, and ligaments. They are a mechanical marvel of nature. The injuries of the ankle and feet are most common in athletes. Approximately 21 percent of these injuries have prolonged morbidity. Each year, millions of Americans come to the podiatrist’s office and complain about swelling, pain, stiffness, and various deformities. A foot problem is a significant problem. It affects the tasks of daily living. Walking, running, going up and down steps, driving, and the simple joys of life as participating in social and recreational activities we love. If you have a higher body weight, you will feel the amount of impact on your feet when running. This is why wearing appropriate footwear that absorbs this impact is a must. Imagine a fully loaded cement truck weighing hundreds of tons. This weight is the equivalent amount of force your feet carry during an average day of walking. For the rehabilitation of ankle injuries, it is crucial to evaluate gait. Gait abnormalities are also a leading cause of ankle injuries. Heel-toe walking allows proper execution of the gait cycle, to prevent abnormal shifts that can stress bones, muscles, and joints. Gait pattern is a much-overlooked aspect of pain management in musculoskeletal disorders. In this book, you will learn all about the feet, common injuries affecting the ankles and feet, traditional interventions and practical exercises, ways to make ice packs, benefits of walking on the beach, and practical strategies for self-management.Become a self-treating patient by getting this audiobook. 1.
